A/Prof Gianluigi Li Bassi is an intensive care specialist, working at the Critical Care Research Group, The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH), Chermside. He received his medical degree from the University of Milan, Italy. During his training in anaesthesia and critical care medicine, worked at the Intensive Care Unit of the Policlinico of Milan, Italy led by Prof. Luciano Gattinoni. He began his research career at the Division of Pulmonary and Cardiac Assist Device, mentored by Theodor Kolobow, the father of ECMO, at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA. In those settings, he tested new preventive approaches to reduce incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia and developed new devices to reduce infections during mechanical ventilation. Upon returning to Europe he moved to Barcelona, Spain to lead the Division of Animal Experimentation, and worked as intensive care consultant at the Pulmonary Critical Care Unit of the Hospital Clinic with Prof. A Torres. Finally, in 2018, he moved to Australia to lead the Division of Animal Experimentation of the Critical Care Research Group (TPCH) and collaborate with Prof. J. Fraser.
Throughout the years A/Prof Li Bassi significantly contributed to the field of cardiopulmonary failure, focusing on heart transplant, ECMO, pulmonary imaging, acute respiratory distress syndrome, ventilator-associated pneumonia. He was chief investigator of the Gravity VAP-Trial, a prospective randomized multicentre clinical trial to study the efficacy and safety of the lateral-Trendelenburg position versus the semi-recumbent position in tracheally intubated and mechanically ventilated patient for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and editorials on these subjects and he wrote a chapter on management of airways secretions in the latest edition of Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation edited by Prof. Martin Tobin. He was awarded several prizes, such as the 2005 American Society Artificial Internal Organs ASAIO Award; 2007 National Institutes of Health Fellows Award for Research Excellence; 2009 ESICM/ECCRN Alain Harf Award on Applied Respiratory Physiology; 2013 ESICM/ECCRN Young Investigator Award; 2018 TPCH Foundation Innovation grant and the 2019 Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Foundation Award. A/Prof Li Bassi is an active member of Critical Care sections of the American Thoracic Society and the American Society of Critical Care Medicine and ad-hoc reviewer of more than 20 medical journals in the fields of critical care medicine and anaesthesia.
A/Prof Li Bassi is currently focusing on developing new technologies to image pulmonary biofluids during mechanical ventilation, heart reconditioning, ECMO, models of haemorrhagic shock and ventilator-associated pneumonia and new therapeutic approaches for ARDS subphenotypes.
